Wellness Defined

Wellness is on a lot of peoples’ minds right now as New Year’s resolutions and intentions are being made for 2019. It has become quite the buzzword and there are countless IG accounts all about it. But what is ‘Wellness’ exactly? How do we weave this concept into our lives?

According to the National Institute of Health, "Wellness is an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices towards, a more successful existence.”

  • Wellness is a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential.

  • Wellness is multidimensional and holistic, encompassing lifestyle, mental and spiritual well-being, and the environment.

  • Wellness is positive and affirming.

So, wow! To me, this sounds GOOD, awesome even. I think it is so important for us to listen to our bodies, make decisions and take actions that improve how we feel. This puts the ball back in our court allowing us to take steps in caring for ourselves. It empowers us to look at all areas of our life and ask, ‘What could I be doing to feel better?” It is recognizing that self-care is not selfish, that it actually allows us to be more present, more productive, and feel great while doing so. ‘Living your best life’ as it were ;)

How is this going to look in your life? This is the best part…. YOU GET TO DECIDE! Developing the mind/body connection is the first step in any wellness endeavor.  What feels good to you may not be right for the next person. The newest fad diet or workout may make you feel yucky or be difficult to integrate into your life.  And if you feel that way, are you going to stick with it? I think true wellness is treating your body with love and wanting to give it everything it needs, not hating it and punishing into a form that is acceptable by society. Find a way of eating that is sustainable and helps you look AND feel your best. Find a way of moving your body that feels great not like a penalty for being unsuitable. Engage in practices that help relieve stress… For one person this may be receiving a massage and for another it may look like meeting friends for a drink or, hell, it may be both!

So, what is your body telling you? Are you listening? I hope you feel empowered to live a life of wellness and if you feel massage and skin care are a part of that, you know where I’m at!

Take care,
